Before You Finalize Dimensions

  • Measure your largest vehicle with mirrors extended
  • Add 2 ft minimum on each side of the vehicle for door opening and walking
  • For vehicle lifts: measure lift height in raised position with vehicle
  • Plan electrical panel size before slab is poured
  • Run conduit before concrete — retrofitting is expensive
  • Determine ventilation strategy (ridge vent, exhaust fans, etc.)
  • Confirm floor slope for drainage if you're washing vehicles

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Under-estimating eave height — clear height is less than eave height
  • Too few electrical outlets — plan double what you think you need
  • Skipping insulation — condensation damages everything in the building
  • 4-inch slab for lift use — under-spec'd concrete fails under point loads
  • Not planning for future expansion — leave room or design for it
  • Overlooking HVAC — heating a large uninsulated metal building is expensive
  • One roll-up door when two makes workflow much easier
